This morning's sandhill crane count was 4600, down from last week's 6700 or
so. However, there were a lot of birds calling from marshes that crane
counters couldn't see, and therefore weren't able to count. (We only count
birds that we can see - in the air flying overhead from refuge marshes t
Sandhill crane count at Sherburne NWR this morning was 6755 birds - our highest
count so far this year. High count in (warm) November last year was 7527.
A single black-bellied plover was still on Stickney Pool mud flats, last leg of
the Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive on Thursday at noon.

Sherburne's sandhill crane count on Thursday, October 11 was 5,300 birds.
To view birds in the morning, they've been leaving the refuge mainly
between 6:45 or 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 or 8:15. On dark mornings they may leave a
little later. The best place is the 25th St. parking area on the NW corn

was in the "sweet spot" because 3500 of those birds flew right over my car. It
