On a very slow birding day, I was pleased to see a small flock of first winter
and adult Snow Buntings around 5 pm at the GWI Park north of Randolph. The
park is increasingly changing, with development near the Hwy 56 entrance and at
different spots on the west side.

On a field trip over to Finland, MN via back roads I was scaring up ever
bigger flocks from the road shoulders or lightly-traveled pavement. I did
not expect them quite so early. Some individuals swept so close to the
windshield I'd start to brake to spare them but they'd sweep to the side.

This afternoon, a flock of 50-60 Snow Buntings was foraging in the farm
fields northwest of the intersection of Station Trail and 170th, at UMORE
Park. They flushed up a few times, but quickly returned to ground--and just
as quickly "disappeared" against the background. However, by aligning

I found hundreds of Snow Buntings along MN Hwy 246 both north and south of
