Craig Mandel and I birded Clay and Grant Counties yesterday (August 4) in search of the state's summer rarities. A brief report:
The Western Wood-Pewee was still singing on-and-off, and flying around, at Buffalo River State Park (Clay Co.). This was around 8:30/9am. We managed to spot one Say's Phoebe--perhaps a juvenile--at the Felton Prairie site (Clay Co.) around 10/10:30am. Dennis and Barb Martin saw both of the birds on August 3 in addition to an adult Golden Eagle, which was likely pushed east due to the extreme droughts in the western Dakotas. We spent a few hours (approx. 1-3pm) at North Ottawa Impoundment (Grant Co.). We did not hear or see either of the King Rails or any herons/egrets of interest. The highlights were 4 Red-necked Phalaropes and 9 other shorebird species, a Canvasback, an American Bittern, and a Virginia Rail and Soras. Good birding!
