While I was doing an aquatic vegetation survey on Green Lake yesterday (I work
for the DNR), one of the summer interns noticed an unusual looking duck. I
didn't have binoculars with me, but we were able to drive the boat close enough
to get a good view before it dove. It was a large duck, dark brownish in color
with a white mark by its eye and white on the wings. The intern thought it
looked like a scoter. I checked the Sibley app on my iPhone, and sure enough,
it looked just like a white winged scoter. The bird was near the southwest
shore of the lake; the only way to see it would be by boat. The lake is about
five miles east of Princeton, just south of highway 95. A public access is
located on the north side of the lake on Pine Lane.
