Just received a call from Linda Sparling that the owl in Sax-Zim along CR 7 is
now on its way to The Raptor Center in St. Paul. It was noted to be in obvious
bad shape and not flying well so it was picked up and is now en route to St.
Paul. It was described as still alive but just barely so.

I was stunned to see the post, and I'm glad of your explanation. I just
hope observers will show ethical behavior, as this has not always been the
case with owls in the past. If nothing else, it should make us more
proactive in protecting this particular habitat as well as the species.

To give proper credit, I believe the bird was found by Heidi Kirsch Novak and
seen by many, including Kim Eckert’s MBW group. I did not see the bird myself.

Nice find, Anthony, and thanks for posting the location! I won’t have time to
go find it, but hopefully many will enjoy this rare sight.
Harassment can be a problem during nesting season, but it seems to me that
viewing this bird under these circumstances is not likely to be problematic at

The Barn Owl that was found by Heidi Kirsch Novak and others is still
present in Sax Zim Bog. It’s currently being seen off County Road 7 just
north of Byrnes Greenhouses actively hunting but being harassed by ravens.

This bird is out of its seasonal range and needs its time and energy to
hunt and survive. Having dozens or more birders harass it is not going to
help it do so. This location should not be shared.

At approximately 1:00 PM today (6/12/12) two of us got a full face on view of
a Barn Owl while walking the Long Meadow lake Trail in the Minnesota Valley
