There are 7 Willets at the Sky Harbor Airport in Duluth on the point past
the dock, viewable from the fence if you walk down by the water. Also
present are Bonapartes Gull, Caspian Tern, Common Tern, and Greater
Yellowlegs. Very few passerines on Park Point so far.

dpecker also aggressively chases a Hairy Woodpecker whenever
it shows up. A few Evening Grosbeaks flew over while I was there.
I birded some areas along 72 and 11 on the way back, but the only birds of
note were Black-billed Magpies, Snow Buntings, and Rough-legged Hawks.

cupful of cracked corn plus some of a commercial mix that includes dried
fruit, peanut pieces, and sunflower chips under our white cedar each
morning. Occasionally I've seen it picking at a cheap blueberry suet cake
I placed under there as well.

I hope I'm wrong and I hope the bird is still alive and either moved on by
its own free will or is due to return any time now, but I thought I should
report its possible death before anyone traveled a long distance to see
it. If it returns, I'll post the good news immediately.

It was behaving very aggressively (chasing and nipping) toward a Mourning
Dove this morning and seems to co-exist around pigeons and squirrels.

I saw the bird at Lebanon Hills yesterday around 9am. It was almost right
at trail marker 42 (I accessed from Cliff Rd), singing on a dead branch
over the trail when I showed up. Good luck.

marshes in the area that still hold water have
American Bittern, Virginia Rail, and Sora still around. Migrant sparrows
were completely absent as were Yellow-rumped or other warblers except the
waterthrush.

This morning around 0830, I found a Northern Hawk Owl along Hwy 2
between Floodwood and the St. Louis River, 3.1 miles W of CR 31, or
more accurately, in the ash swamp along Hwy 2 almost directly across
from Lavoy Rd.

Today, Earl Orf and I had great looks at a rufous female Spruce Grouse
along CR 552 (well north of Nashwauk...road runs along the east side
of Bear Lake).
We found the grouse where the 25-30 year old jack pine begin, maybe
3/4 of a mile or so south of CR 52.

Just for the sake of phenology, I thought I'd report that I heard a
Ruffed Grouse drumming several times in an area north of Hibbing on
3/19.
My records aren't the best, but this is about a week earlier than I've
noted my first drumming grouse in past years.

There are more Eurasian Collared-doves turning up in Grand Rapids.
This morning, I stumbled on a pair at the corner of 4th Ave NW and 6th
St NW, well away from the original 3 EC Doves, which, are still
present on and around Ha-Car Drive.

Today, on the way through Carlton County, I stopped at about 3:00 pm to observe
a Northern Hawk Owl perched on a utility pole. It was located along Hwy 73 at
exactly mile marker 27, which I believe is just north of Cromwell, but I might

After some sorting, I noticed an apparent male Hoary Redpoll foraging on the
ground beneath the Effie Cafe feeders with several other finch species (Common
Redpoll, Pine Siskin, American Goldfinch, Pine Grosbeak).
'd be real tough to find one
doing that.
I appreciate all the replies I received. Looks like it's worth trying a little
of all of the above for this elusive species!
