I just received a secondhand report of a Common Ground Dove in the Sax-Zim Bog.
The unknown birders told another birder that they watched it for 20 minutes
feeding on Dass Road near the "Sharp-tailed Grouse spot"??
Dass Road is the N-S stretch of CR29 west of CR7/Kelsey and east of Owl A

Nelson Road is an E-W road between Howard Gnesen Rd and Arnold Rd north of
Martin Rd (north of Duluth)
Be aware that the blue mobile home is right near the road, so please respect

An interesting side note...I saw a lone Great Gray less than 2 miles from here

Hunting a small patch of bare ground...Not a bog for miles around.
The bizarre thing is that my son and I saw one in this stretch last April.

Hi Josh,Maybe listen to the ALTERNATE song of the Northern Parula...It sounds
very similar to what you describe... and is reminiscent of a Cerulean and
Black-throated Blue. I have been fooled before.

At 7:21am Karl Bardon found a 3rd state record Wilson's Plover on Park Point
today. The bird is still foraging lakeside just beyond the airport hangers with
Sanderlings and Ruddy Turnstone at 9:45

River with a cygnet. I've been looking for it and glad to hear of this
sighting! It usually shows up on Lake St. Croix before freeze up. A Solon
resident has several pictures of this bird over the years, as it frequents the
area in front of his place. It would be nice to figure out where this
away. Also Downy Woodpeckers here. [Thanks to the Ely
Field Naturalists for this location!]

The Boreal dozed, then hunted actively...and even plunged in the snow but sadly

As Mike Hendrickson noted, there was some whitewash on the branch so maybe this

Great Gray Owl about 3 1/2 to 4 miles N. Of Sax Rd. on McDavitt just before an
abandoned house on West side.
Spent an enjoyable hour watching him hunt...in strong south winds and snow
flurries. Caught one vole.

Stoney River Forest Road is not plowed and I saw very little sign of
pending logging activity that would require plowing. It was fine but
Whyte Road was dicey...and more snow expected.

The area is a half mile walk in and it was heard another quarter mile into the
woods so not much chance of seeing it.

out to be another boreal owl irruption year. As with most such events, a small
proportion of the birds become hungry enough they're forced to hunt in the
daytime, and unfortunately, in some cases perish. Once again I'm

Last night (Monday night) after dark, he found a Boreal Owl on a snowbank in
the alley behind CPL. It was clutching a small bird carcass. He was able to
approach within a few feet before it fluttered off with its prize.
