If you're having this problem under windows, you can easily reset to the 
system default by running IE and bringing up the View|Internet Options 
menu.  Tab over to the Programs tab.  Make sure that the checkbox for 
"Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default brower" 
is selected.  The next time you start IE, it'll ask if you want to set 
IE as the default browser.  If you agree, you should be able to view 
.jpg files with IE.

I'm sure there are other ways to reset the associations, but this works too.
