You should try Windows XP.  One of it's main features addresses this
scenario.  It can switch between user sessions without closing all of
the programs in a session before switching to the next so your wife
can have her own desktop, browser, settings, etc..

Yes, the user sessions can be optionally password protected.

Under this system mozilla wouldn't need to concern itself with the
issue.  It just has to store it's settings in the user's directory or
the user's registry rather than a system wide location.  Although I'm
not sure mozilla stores information like this yet...
