For some reason my message has not been clear to
members of the list. I did not want people to argue about Lydia House, the
number of shelters in Whittier, or the proposed West Bank Shelter.
Listen up!
I am asking where all the homeless people I see
downtown (not south or east of downtown) can go during the DAY (that's during
daylight hours, folks). I am not talking about mats on the floor. That
discussion is not relevant here.
Do we (or should we) have a downtown *daytime*
drop-in shelter where people can get warm, read the paper, get some coffee,
snooze, and most importantly use the bathroom? Is there a supervised
shelter that can hope to provide a safe place for the dozens of people who need
to get out of the freezing cold temperatures? Is the public library the
only place they can go, and if so, is this the appropriate place?
Guess what? The Library is closing August 1 -
in the hottest part of the summer, when people also seek shelter. When it
reopens next winter in temporary quarters, it will have less than 50% of the
seats it has now. What happens then?
Any ideas on this?
