Subject: Standoff on James
the police and an armed 17-year-old boy on the 2500 block of James Avenue North. This
happened on the very block we gathered last Friday and about which you read yesterday.
In fact, the young man was the grandson of the woman who bemoaned the fact that we now
needed missionaries in North Minneapolis. It turns out that this was a "garbage house"
that the city had ordered cleaned by today or be to shut down. So today the house
became the second boarded house on this beleaguered block.
The young man was a parolee and neighborhood problem. He was a habitual truant who
sold and used drugs. He was involved in an abusive relationship with a girl. A few
nights ago, he chased her out of the house, firing his gun at her. Two nights ago, she
ran out of the house and he followed her, firing shots into the air. She called 911
and the standoff was on.

This incident demonstrates that this home was one ingredient in the deterioration of
the block. It also demonstrates that often homes most terrorized by violence also are
venues for it and helplessly produce children who become part of the very problem they
fear.

As we continue to do our part, let us consider that our presence and activities on
Friday night might have defused the mood and spirit of the block enough to prevent an
even worse tragedy.
