As part of a lawsuit settlement,
Minneapolis officials will announce
today that police officers will be required
to take training on a state law that makes
it illegal for a store or restaurant to
refuse service on the basis of a person's
race.

The action stems from a 1999 suit alleging
that officers didn't adequately investigate
the complaint of two black women who said
they weren't allowed to buy a lottery ticket
at a Tom Thumb convenience store and were
subjected to racial epithets. The officers
didn't take a report on the incident and later
said in a deposition that they weren't aware of
the state law, said the women's attorney,
Jill Clark.
