looks like it's really a problem with MRTG.
If nobody has a better idea, I will try to run MRTG via cron instead as
a daemon.

Agreed. Chances are MRTG in daemon mode will not refresh the IP address.
Sort of
Your resolver will cache the IP address when MRTG starts in daemon mode. You
would need to stop and start it to make the DNS change effective or switch
to cron like you said.
