Note that --trial does submit to the db; it just marks the results as
"trials". And "trial" results don't show up in default searches (you
have to specifically enable showing trial results).

You know -- I think the run_random_hostname_patterns.pl thingy was
from the ORTE tests that Sun started but never had a chance to finish
(under ompi-tests/orte).
Were you running something under there, perchance?
