I am trying to sync my Sony Ericsson T628 (Chinese
version of the T630) with Evolution using on an Apple
G3 PowerBook (Infrared) running Debian
Testing/Unstable --- a challenge for an inexperienced
Linux user like me!

Thanks very much. We'll start taking a look now, but as you suggested we
will probably ask you to redo that patch after 0.82 is released and the
HEAD moved to 0.90 (in about a month).

I am assuming that your are syncing using the Evolution as the other
plugin (and running Evo 1.4).
Can you make sure you are following the steps in
http://multisync.sourceforge.net/opie_sync/howto.shtml.
Also if you are running RH9 or FC1 then try starting mulitsync with "env
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4
