I recently switched over from Courier IMAP to Dovecot for various reasons,
and I'm generally quite happy, but the one thing I missed was the server-side
delete-to-trash functionality Courier provided.

Looks like its same issue even w/ 1.5.21 :

After I type in my pwd inside after running mutt applicaiton, I get
Logging In and then this msg
"Error opening mailbox"
How do I fix this

This works for me, but my build doesn't try to use external dotlock.
What are your configure options?
Try 'make distclean'. Then configure again, adding
--disable-external-dotlock to your configure op
