I get the feeling that mutt and Exchange interacting over IMAP aren't
happy companions, am I correct?

I have no local mail, all my mail access is over IMAP.

I can use mutt to access my departmental (dovecote) mail server over IMAP
and it is quick - downloads 3000+ headers in a second or so.

When I use mutt to access the University Exchange server it takes well
over 5 seconds to download 250 headers.

My configuration is

set folder=imaps://[IMAPS server address]/
set hostname=le.ac.uk
set imap_keepalive=15
set imap_pass=[my password]
set imap_pipeline_depth=0
set imap_user=[my name]
set mail_check=90
set spoolfile=imaps://[IMAPS server address]/Inbox
set ssl_use_sslv3=yes
set timeout=300

I know I can cache the headers (or even bodies if I want) to speed up
subsequent accesses, but can I speed up the initial access? I don't need
to cache anything with Dovecote as access is so quick.

As an aside (Al)pine is fast with both Dovecote and Exchange so it doesn't
appear to be an Exchange IMAP problem (although it took MS long enough to
sort out IMAP such that common MUAs worked with it at least half
heartedly)

Thanks

John
