with python's socket library. It should be fixed by now - and
in any case, the worst that can happen is that offlineimap randomly
crashes on large e-mails, but it will not lose email in the process.

is to have a local copy of them, using a tool like
offlineimap, and then point mutt and mairix to the local maildir instead
of the imap server. Plus you get offline access to your e-mail as a
bonus!

Through putty there is no X server, so
that fails - after a timeout (X11 is network-oriented, one needs to wait
for network lag). I am guessing that the timeout on your system is set
to 20 seconds ...

I know it is not
implemented there.
One cool project could be a "virtual IMAP server" or "caching IMAP
proxy" that does just that - I looked for one and found nothing ... If
anyone knows one, please inform the list !

resets its state somehow and then re-reads the messages
in the folder, but doesn't re-run the hooks because it doesn't change
folder ...]
Is there a way to keep the threads collapsed when this happens ?
