running in background on send

when I send an email, the status bar immediately shows: "Looking up smtp.blah.org"... my muttrc does have:set sendmail_wait=-1... but regardless of the value, it takes about 45 seconds to finally send. is this maybe a postfix issue ? any suggestions would be appreciated !
