Unfortunately, nothing comes even close to MLO. I have looked hard, and the
only thing I found was an open source package which had some great
features, but written in Java (i think) and is just painful to interact
with (so ugly, etc) that it detracts from productivity, at least for me.

Sounds like you're in the first blush of wrapping your head around this
stuff (e.g. GTD). Certainly you could do much, much, worse than starting
with MLO as you begin your journey. I've no doubt we all wish you a
successful one beyond your wildest hopes.

I suspect you will have all kinds of trouble with it. First of all,
Dropbox only changes the entire file. So if your wife wants to add a task,
and you are traveling, and you add a task, you are going to get an error
and there will be no way of resolving what tasks have been added to both
sides.
And because 1 installation is on spouse's laptop, unless you consider her to be
your property I suspect you need another license.
