mysqldump and locking

I have a database-driven web site that uses PHP and MySQL 3.23.38. The database is about 1 gigabyte in size. While performing a mysqldump --opt to back up the database, the web site is completely inaccessible. After doing some investigating, I believe that this is because of the --lock-tables
