As root you need to log in to the database mysql. You then need to give
whatever priviledges you want to your normal account. See section 6.14 in
the manual (Adding New user Privileges to MySQL).

I've just read it and it seems appropriate.
No it isn't a PHP centered article. It does a pretty good comparison (in my
mind) of the plusses and minuses of both MySQL and PostgreSQL
I get MySQL running I more or less know what I am doing but to start it
I am stumped.
