how to go about it

I have created a mysql based intranet and it has occurred to me that I
need to find out how to manage the log files but I cannot find them.
I downloaded the binary
mysql-3.23.41-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz
and installed to /usr/local/mysql
where should I look? Are they turned off by default ???
