I have a question about the combination of RAND and LIMIT 1. If I have
a query like:
SELECT ... ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1
with the ... replaced with a normal query on one table. How is this
implemented? Is this optimized for the fact that it only needs one
entry?
And what about when

It means the variable contains only positive values - otherwise one
bit would be used to denote whether it's positive or negative. From
the documentation:
SMALLINT[(M)] [UNSIGNED] [ZEROFILL]
A small integer. The signed range is -32768 to 32767. The unsigned
range is 0 to 65535.
