access denied problem

Hi,

I just installed Mysql from source for Linux. When I type the following command:

mysqladmin -u root password mysql

I got this error:

mysqladmin:connect to server@"localhost' failed
error:'access denied for user:'root@localhost'(using password:NO)'

Can some tell me how to correct this problem? Thanks!
