I tried (and got back) this:
[mbase:~] ted% safe_mysqld
touch: /usr/var/mbase.err: No such file or directory
chown: mysql: invalid user name
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/var
/usr/bin/safe_mysqld: no such file or directory: /usr/var/mbase.err [229]
/usr/bin/safe_mysqld: no
i tried to start mysql thinking it was preinstalled on OS X Server.
is it not installed on OS X Server? apparently all of the usual files are
not there?
any insight?

Before posting, please check:
i have Mac OS X Server and i think MySQL is preinstalled, but it's not
running so i tried to start it and got the typical socket error 2002.
then i tried this:

chown: mysql: invalid user name
Starting mysqld daemon

i untarred the siag app (very cool, hope it'll work) and dropped in
my home dir.
then i ran ./configure, make and make install...
i got:
checking host system type... configure: error: can not guess host
type; you must specify one
configure: error: ./configure failed for XawM
so, does this mean:
siag works in Mac OS X, but in X Windows, i.e., XonX?
and, do i then have to use MySQL for X Windows (XFree86) system also
or can i use the same MySQL i have for/on OS X itself?
thank you.

if any of you are familar with (File Maker Pro, most recent
versions)... how does one go about using MySQL to create a printable
report? e.g., where you select the fields you wanted in the report
and then create a layout and page setup for the report, (then print
it)?
anyone know where (or even just how-to) find info on getting mysql to
start with system boot?
thank you in advance.
