some more notes:
when using strace to trace the startup, I see some strange errors:
read(198, " test -z \"$defaults\"\n then\n"..., 1024) = 1024
xstat(2, "/usr/local/mysql/var/data/mysql", 0xe0a31d0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
xstat(2, "./share/mysql/english/errmsg.sys", 0xe0
