David: This behavior is by design. Once upon a time in a land very far away (okay, many lands; it's the Internet), people would instantly post to the list when they got stuck without checking the online documentation, which even then was quite extensive and thorough. The administrivia that shows up at the end of each message is by design to give people the hint to check the manual before posting; and a quick unsubscribe reference for the occasional list member who has a nervous breakdown during the departure-from-the-list process.
