InnoDB ibd file hit 400MB default

I've been using InnoDB for the last week or so with good results then all of a sudden I started getting errors : table is full. I finally tracked it down to the size of the IBD file which I had at the 400MB default. Does an IBD file expand out columns to their data type max size ? I
