Make sure /etc/hosts has this line
127.0.0.1 localhost

Are you getting this regardless of what you put in user,host and db tables.
If you are I am getting the same thing. Any access to my database is denied
except from the console.
How did you install - from the rpm's ??
I will watch this thread as I am at a complete standstill with MySQL
