Yes, it really is 255.
need something bigger?
try:
TINYBLOB
MEDIUMBLOB
LONGBLOB
etc..

LONGBLOB will hold  L+4 bytes, where L < 2^32  

2^32 is large enough for most things.

    Curious about the maximum string size for various field types.  Eg.
