Some other useful information on this problem: I have tried the operation in two other ways, both based on a version of the program with only one connection using the API and emiting the UPDATE statments on standard output:
1. output piped onto mysql --> failure :-( 2. output saved on a file, then input to mysql --> success :-) This fits my diagnosis that it has to do with concurrent access to the same table.
