Ok,

Looks like I will be building my own server for my company.
Its sole purpose will be to run mysql/php/apahce as fast as possible for
under $2.5k
I'm not using mysql for storage. I will be using it to return many complex
queries in fewer seconds. Its speed over space.

So far I've been able to rig three SCSI U320 15krpm, 18.5gig for raid 5,
dual (2) opteron processors, and just a lousy gig of ram.

Now a gig of ram goes for about $240 or so for this type of setup. Adding
another gig isn't that much of a deal, beyond that I go over the budget. So
I was thinking, maybe I am looking to high at the servers? Perhaps I should
cut down to two atholons with more ram? Would this return my queries faster?

What is the correct ratio to optimize mysql between processing and ram?
How much ram would be needed to utilize to get to utilize the top speed of
my processors?

Hopefully this will be an interesting discussion.

Best,
Yoed
