I would say that mysql 4.X, when it is production ready, will be the best for J2EE
applications. And using mysql with jboss (www.jboss.org) (add Tomcat or Jetty to the
mix) is a very powerful, open source application.
If a company can afford BEA, then they can also afford a data base like
