For anyone having trouble with shutting down mysqld on OS X (especially if it times out waiting on the PID file): I had been having trouble getting mysql (3.23.26) to shutdown on OS X (10.1.1). I had been using sudo to start safe_mysqld with user mysql Now I su as user mysql to run safe_mysqld
