I think you should be safe to just restart MySQL

Restarting mysql should recreate the socket.

Become root, and do:
mksock /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
chmod 777 /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
chown . /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
replace and by the user/group the mysql proc
