I have a similar issue on FreeBSD, which I've solved by increasing
the open-files-limit. Follow recomendations from:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/not-enough-file-handles.html
I needed to increase the system limits as well (kern.maxfilesperproc
sysctl variable).
