thanks, but "-V" shows 3.23.36 and there are no underscores in dbnames!

we compile and install from tarball source mysql 3.23.36. mysql-server seems
to work but if I try mysqldump or mysqlshow, I only get version banner from
mysqld. mysqldump is important for dayly saving the database on tape, so we
can't live withoit it.
Strange behavour: If I use a wrong db-name
