I'm experiencing a similar problem (with a pcHDTV HD5500) even after
installing the PPA (via mythbuntu-repos) and installing all the updates.
I get this error in the backend when trying to switch channels in LiveTV
(NTSC).

Title:
  format_to_mode() does not recognize V4L1

Status in Mythbuntu, Ubuntu derivative focused upon MythTV:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  I tried to get my Hauppauge card (either the 150, 250, or 350, sorry,
  I can't remember which) to work this evening with mythbuntu 11.04 and
  one of the error messages I found it the log files was:

  format_to_mode() does not recognize V4L1

  I looked online and I found this discussion on the subject:

  http://www.mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-users/2011-May/315349.html

  which seemed to boil down to this comment:

  Kernel 2.6.38 removed V4L1 support. MythTV requires it. Ubuntu is

  I don't know what is to be done about this, but it seems like a serious
problem somewhere. I'll provide more details if needed, but this seems like a
problem that is known to occur.
  Thanks,
  Eli
