First dev post, please don't bite :(

I was just sitting down to nut out how my mini JSP's are going to
interface with myth to do things like checking the tuner status etc
when I thought I should check the list for related posts. Its kinda
funny that this thread is here and just a couple of days old.

I would like to put forward my vote for being able to probe the
backend with something other than C++ (and preferably not using SQL).

The way I was looking at it was using JNI, have a request dispatcher
class that interfaces between the Java server and the C++ backend. My
JSP's would then talk to my Java server.

It should be known I have no C++ experience, no JNI experience and
have only just started using RMI at work :| That said, I like a
challenge and will like need to work with JNI soon, so now is as good
a time as any.

With many people seeming to want an open interface, wouldn't it be a
decent idea to look at using something open like CORBA for requests
between the backend and *any* frontend. I understand this is going to
cause issues because the mythprotocol is used for transporting video
(isn't it?) but maybe it is something to consider for the future.

If there was some common interface that can be used by just about
*anyone* wouldn't that be great for Myth?

Please, don't get me wrong Isaac and the rest of the devs, I am not
bashing Myth in anyway, I have grown to love it as my own little baby.
Infact I defend it to my friends/family/coworkers on a daily basis, I
would just love to be able to play with it a little more from a
development point of view.

Thanks,
Dave
