machine, "mythtv", has the database, a backend and a frontend.
It has been running well for a long time, on Debian unstable and mythTV
Version 0.16.
The remote frontend can connect to the database, but not to the mythtv
backend.
I can't help you with the cable box problem, but I can
give some guidance on the remote control.
The IR receiver of the Hauppauge supports RC-5 VCR
codes, so you'll need to set your remote to send them.

I had this problem and it was a driver loading issue. Restarting
just the backend on boot fixed it for me. Had to add
/sbin/service to my /etc/sudoers file as well.
