recording two different shows with 2-PVR-250s. Watching on one front
end was fine, the second one really drug it down.

Maybe you're not loading it, as Isaac indicated.
The commands you are citing are the commands to manually load ivtv.

this before on an FCx system.
As I recall I installed using Jarod's fabulous guide, but forgot to
install the kmdl for ALSA. Sound would work, for a time, but sometime
between 12 and 36 hours, I'd get the message you describe.
If you instaleld it using apt, you should remove with apt.
apt-get remove on a dependency does wonders.
