1.) I was, in fact, changing the channel on my cable box (serial cable
was going from my mthtv box to the Motorola STB- I just didn't see the
numbers changing). This seems to be all set.

Ah! Yeah, stupid me. I actually watched the cable box and didn't see anything happen, so what you're saying about an inactive serial port is entirely possible. I'll have to call them up and ask about it. Thanks!
