i found the source of my problem. i did not have capture turned on
on the backend. silly me. now both the mac and and linux frontends
have sound. myth is wonderful.

Mixer Device: [
Mine has:
Audio Output Device: blank (i.e. nothing in the text box)
Use internal volume controls: checked
Mixer Device: blank (i.e. nothing in the text box)
Mixer Controls: PCM
