Hmmm...please excuse my stupidity. It seems I uninstalled gnome without even realising. I simply reinstalled that package using synaptic and all is running finen again now (except for a few lost gnome applets).
I have no idea why this happened, but it serves me right for not reading what synaptic is telling me.
