I can't speak to your ATI issues but I can confirm that it is possible to get this setup working in Gentoo as I'm watching CSI on my Gentoo bases MythTV box now :)  My setup has an Nvidia based video card which does not allow me to use the kernel frame buffer device along with the nvidia.ko ker
