I havenow set it tot low quality (indeed, that's good enough). There is some improvement but not spectacular. I would prefer that the raw ripping stepping is done as fast as possible and the compression is done later in the background so that I can continue using myth. A possible answer to that is

the CD isn't just about raw data transfer from the disk, it's got to
be converted from cdda to mp3 in the process. If in doubt, install
grip and run that on the desktop. There you can see the transfer from
disk speed separate
