If you read the guide and are new to Linux, it may not be apparent
(although it clearly does say add) that this is not

Prior to that I had a failure:
apt-get install ivtv-kmdl-$KVER
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package ivtv-kmdl
so I re-inst
