Very silly of me, I just checked what mythfrontend displayed when run:
mythtv: bad file format, /home/trev/.mythtv/lircrc:192
I had made a typo when editing the file!

Further to my last message, if I start mythfrontend I get:

Mar 12 19:26:15 localhost lircd 0.7.0: removed client
in the /var/log/lircd file,
Is there a setting in mythtv I need to set to sort this out.

I found mythtv to be really good and appreciate all the time and effort that
has gone into producing it
I had managed to get everything working and just needed to change some of the
button settings on my Remote control.
Unfortunately I adjusted the key settingings in lircrc and killed lircrd
