Do you have an nvidia video card?
If so, start using opengl vsync instead of letting it go with usleep.
If not, at least change the permissions on /dev/rtc to allow it to be
used for timing.
Also, if you have an nvidia video card you can try to enable xvmc to

mplayer does:
